Brawl clubs thrown out

July 24, 2010
Glen Rovers and Bride Rovers have been thrown out of the Cork county hurling championship following a brawl between the two clubs last month.

Glen Rovers' 3-23 to 1-17 second round victory on June 27 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh was overshadowed by fighting involving players, substitutes and mentors from both sides in first half stoppage-time.

Following an investigation, the Cork county board proposed a fine of €7,500 for both clubs and two-month suspensions for a player on each side. Yet, while their fines have been reduced to €5,000 after appeals, they have now been informed that they're out of the competition and there is speculation locally that the clubs could protest by withdrawing their players - Brian Murphy (Bride Rovers), Patrick Horgan and Graham Callanan (Glen Rovers) - from the Cork squad for tomorrow's hurling quarter-final against Antrim.
