22 October 2009The draws for the 2010 All-Ireland provincial senior football and hurling championships have been made at Croke Park throwing up some intriguing encounters.
In the football, Ulster looks to be one of the hardest provinces to call again, with Derry and Armagh facing off in the preliminary round and the winners of that taking on Monaghan in Clones. Antrim and Tyrone is a repeat of this year's decider up north, while Cavan host Fermanagh in the first round again and Donegal welcome Down to Ballybofey.
In Connacht, the winners of New York and Galway will take on either Sligo or Mayo in the semi-finals, and on the other side of the draw Leitrim will face either London or Roscommon. Across the way in Leinster, the pick of the draw is between defending champions Dublin and Jason Ryan's Wexford, while the winners of neighbours Louth and Longford take on this year's finalists Kildare. Mick O'Dwyer's Wicklow will meet Carlow or Westmeath and either Meath or Offaly will face Laois in Navan or Tullamore.
Down south, Cork and Kerry look to be on another collision course, as the Rebels await the winners of the Kingdom and Tipperary in one semi-final, while 2009 finalists Limerick will play either Clare or Waterford in the other semi.
In the senior hurling provincials, the most attractive clash looks to be in Thurles, where defending champions Tipperary and Cork will meet in the only Munster quarter-final. In the semi-finals, there is a homecoming for Davy Fitzgerald as Waterford visit Clare and the other last four encounter pits Limerick at home against either Cork or Tipperary.
In Leinster, Carlow host Laois in the preliminary round of the province and the winners of that must travel to the capital to meet Dublin, where the victors face a date with Brian Cody's five-in-a-row chasing Kilkenny in the semi-finals. On the other side, Galway and Antrim could well be set to meet in the eastern province for the first time if they can come through their respective quarter-finals against Wexford and Offaly.
