Gardai turn to phone experts in McCarthy probe

March 12, 2009
Gardai are hoping telecommunication experts can help them in their search for the thugs who issued death threats to former Cork hurling manager Gerald McCarthy. Sources said gardai would identify those responsible by using the latest technology. It is believed the Cork county board will take steps against anyone convicted of targeting McCarthy, including a ban on attending GAA matches in the county. McCarthy said one of the main reasons why he had decided to step down was because of concerns for the safety of his family. It has emerged that the McCarthy family were traumatised by several anonymous phone calls to their home, some as late as 4am. At one point, McCarthy's son received a death threat from a belligerent hurling supporter targeting his father, who was abroad at the time. Detectives are now awaiting a detailed breakdown of all telephone calls made to McCarthy's home, and will work with telecommunication experts to identify all callers. It is understood that RTE are hoping to line up the St. Finbarr's clubman to appear on Friday's Late Late Show.
