O hAiplin eager to end Cats' dominance

September 30, 2008
Sean Og O hAilpin has urged the Cork county board to get its underage structures in order or the Liam McCarthy Cup will be heading to Kilkenny every year. The former All-Ireland winning captain has warned that unless there is investment at underage level, Cork will fall further behind the all-conquering Cats. "I just want to put the question out there for proud Cork people that do they worry or care about Cork hurling, everyone has to look at themselves and ask where Cork is going," he said. "Because for the next couple of years the way it is going, Liam McCarthy is only going one way - down to Kilkenny." O hAilpin revealed his motivation for committing to Cork for 2009 is the chance to stop the Cats from pulling away at the top of the All-Ireland roll of honour. Kilkenny overtook their Munster rivals at the top of the honours list when they collected their 31st All-Ireland title earlier this month. "It was the fact that they went ahead of us in the roll of honour that really stuck a dagger in our hearts. It is not like with Kerry in the football because Kerry have 36 to Dublin's 22 titles. "It was something that we knew Kilkenny were there or thereabouts but it was something we could always hit them back with. That is gone now. That is the motivation now. "I think it is not alone a challenge for the players in the Cork team, but a challenge for the GAA as a whole in Cork."
