Cork SHC: Sarsfields bridge 11-year gap
September 15, 2008
Cork football star Michael Cussen came off the bench to help Sarsfields book their place in the Cork SHC final at the expense of Glen Rovers.
Sarsfields...2-14
Glen Rovers.0-17
Cussen's introduction at full forward for the second half was a key factor in the win which ensured Sars' a place in the final against Bride Rovers. Their last final appearance was in 1997, while you have to go back 50 years for their last final victory.
The signs didn't look good for the Glanmire men when they trailed by 1-4 to 0-10 at half-time. However, a 42nd minute goal from Cian McCarthy - son of former Cork great Teddy - turned the game on its head as Sars moved into a 2-11 to 0-13 lead.
However, Glen Rovers refused to throw in the towel and points from Patrick Horgan, John Anderson and Eoin Cronin had reduced the deficit to the minimum with three minutes remaining. But Sars were not to be denied and they sealed victory with late strikes from Cussen and Robert O'Driscoll.
