Murray praised for goalkeeping heroics
September 15, 2008
Cork manager Denise Cronin heaped praise on Aoife Murray after the goalkeeper's brilliant performance in the All-Ireland camogie final triumph over Galway.
Murray claimed she was at fault for Galway's first half goal, but more than redeemed herself when she stopped a 37th minute penalty and also made a spectacular save in injury-time.
"Aoife was outstanding," Cronin said. "She was very disappointed with the goal that went in. We know she is one of the best players in the country and I think she proved that."
The Cloughduv goalkeeper acknowledged the role team captain Catriona Foley played in helping her to get over her first half mistake.
"She came in and picked me off the ground. At the end of the day my job is to keep the ball out of the net. If I have to pick it out of the net it has to be a good shot and it has to be a good goal. In fairness I messed up," she said.
Galway selector Damien Coleman was not only regretful of the chances which Murray denied them, but of the fact that none of the forwards managed to score from play.
"We just feel we might have left that game behind us but there are no blame games."
Player of the match Briege Corkery, who will be back in Croke Park in two weeks' time to play in the All-Ireland ladies football final, said Galway had given the Rebelettes a huge test.
"Galway gave us everything. They gave us 'belting and skelting' but we gave the same back.
"Our defence has been unreal all year. The girls were outstanding... you'd imagine they never won an All-Ireland before!" she said.
