Duggan hoping character can pull Rebels through

August 22, 2008
Cork's Diarmuid Duggan is hoping that the character the Munster Champions showed in their wins over Limerick and Kerry on the provincial stage can pull them through this Sunday again against Kerry. Duggan received the Man of the Match award on the win Munster final win over Kerry, and believes that the Rebels pulled on out of the fire to clinch their first piece of silverware this year. "Looking at things at half-time it was very difficult to see a way through it," said Duggan. "To pull it out of the fire like we did was a big achievement and we were very happy. "To win the Man of the Match award against the All-Ireland Champions was an added bonus. You have to get a buzz out of that. I did." Two late goals against Limerick beforehand rescued Conor Counihan's side from defeat against the Treaty County before their provincial triumph over Kerry and Duggan thinks that the team's experience and belief on that day could count for a lot this Sunday against their old rivals. "As it turned out Limerick have proven what a good side they are," admits Duggan. "At that time - no disrespect to Limerick - if in the closing minutes you weren't beating Limerick you would find it very hard to believe you could beat Kerry or Dublin. "Certainly there were doubts, but we had enough character to pull through. That says a lot for the team as well. "This team has been going the last four or five years. We have an amount of experience. We have got to numerous semi-finals, the final last year. "It is no flash in the pan. We have built up an awful lot of experience and belief."
