Cork legend's son comes close to Old Trafford upset

Rochdale AFC manager Brian Barry-Murphy

The son of Cork legend Jimmy Barry-Murphy almost plotted a historic win for Rochdale AFC over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last night.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side held the Premier League giants to a 1-1 draw before going down on penalties (5-3) Old Trafford.

Mason Greenwood had given a wasteful United outfit the lead on 68 minutes before the League One side equalised seven minutes later through 16-year-old Luke Matheson to effectively send the third round tie into penalties.

The shoot-out went in the Red Devils’ favour after scoring all of their spot kicks and Barry-Murphy said he was proud of his players’ effort, with the Rebel County native stating afterwards:

“They're a very young group of guys and challenged themselves to put on a performance that they thought we were capable of producing,” said the Rochdale boss.

"We kind of displayed our personality I felt throughout the game and that was the most rewarding thing for me, for what the lads displayed of themselves."
