Carr sympathizes with Clare

August 08, 2008
Tipperary under-21 hurling manager Declan Carr has stressed that a draw would have been the fairest result in the Munster final clash between the Premier County and Clare. The match ended in controversy when Clare were awarded a 20-metre free only for the referee to change his mind with his umpire at the Clare end of the pitch and award a '65 to Tipp for an earlier offence by the Banner goalkeeper David Touhy, who is adjudged to have stepped outside the small parallelogram, while taking a puck out. Tipp forward Pa Bourke converted the free to put his side one point in front and the final whistle went soon after much to the delight of the Tipperary following, but to the angst of the Clare contingent. Clare have indicated that they may appeal the decision, but Tipp are adamant that they won fair and squad and although Carr feels that Clare were hard done by, he stressed that they are in place. "The 30 players who played the game out there have no bearing on the referee or the crowd and it is unfortunate for the 15 Tipp and Clare lads who finished the game with the way things turned out," said the former All-Ireland winner. "I have huge sympathy for the Clare players, but we all play sport and we all enjoy sport and take it seriously."
