Council begins probe into under 21 final row
August 07, 2008
The Munster Council has launched an investigation into the chaotic scenes which marred the end of last week's provincial under 21 hurling final in Ennis.
Tipperary beat Clare in highly controversial circumstances and after the final whistle, referee Jason O'Mahony and his fellow officials had to be escorted from the field by Gardai. Angry Clare fans invaded the pitch after the decision to award Tipp a late free which sealed a one-point win for the rather trivial offence of Clare goalkeeper Donal Tuohy stepping outside the small square for a puckout.
A statement issued by the Munster Council read: "Following a meeting to examine the referee's report of the recent Munster under 21 hurling championship final between Tipperary and Clare, the Competitions Control Committee of the Munster Council has initiated an investigation into incidents that occurred after the conclusion of the game."
The provincial body has promised a further statement once the inquiry is concluded, while Gardai are also conducting their own investigation into the post-match scenes.
