Ger Cunningham has admitted that Donal Og Cusack's decision to join Davy Fitzgerald in Clare came as a complete surprise to him.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star ahead of Sunday's AIG hurling classic between his Dublin team and manager-less Galway in Boston, the man who preceded Cusack as Cork hurling goalkeeper said: "It really came from left field.

"When I heard the appointment, I wasn't surprised that Donal Og would be getting involved in coaching, but that the two of them would have worked together, given past histories...

"They were goalkeeping adversaries, obviously, but also stuff you would have read in both books about the rivalry that they would have had with one another."

Former Cork selector and All-Ireland club winning manager Patsy Morrissey, along with ex-Dublin footballer Liam Walsh, were ratified as Cunningham's new Dublin selectors on Monday night.
