"The snipers are already lining up Davy"

Anthony Daly has described the recent criticism of Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald as "ridiculous".

Writing in his new Irish Examiner column today, Daly jumps to the defence of his former team-mate who has come in for some stick after the Banner's poor start to their Allianz League Division 1B campaign.

"The snipers are already lining up Davy Fitzgerald in Clare after their successive defeats (to Galway and Cork)," the two-time All-Ireland winning captain noted.

"Some of the reaction on social media over the weekend was outrageous and way too personal. When Clare won the All-Ireland in 1997, nobody mentioned that we were relegated in the league that year.

"Clare have had a poor start, but it's ridiculous how some people are getting carried away."

Fitzgerald refused to offer excuses after the 0-17 to 1-24 reversal in Pairc Ui Rinn.

"Injuries aren't a problem, we won't know until next week but if they're right they'll go back into the Fitzgibbon (Cup this week)," he said.

"But that won't be an excuse, we have what we have. We'll get a bit of heat, but that's the way it goes."
