Flan referees his 3,000th game

Well-known Clare referee Flan O'Reilly has no plans to hang up his whistle after taking charge of his 3,000 game last weekend.

The Cratloe clubman, who is originally from Ballynacally, reached the milestone last Saturday when he handled the Clare IHC tie between Smith O'Brien's and Meelick in Clonlara. He refereed his first game in 1968, but only took it up seriously in 1993 when he started keeping a record of the number of games he has taken charge of.

Flan, who officiates in both codes, told the Clare Champion: "The first game that I recorded was a junior hurling fixture between Sixmilebridge and Parteen in early 1993. It ended in a draw.

"I see my role as being involved as little as possible, as the players determine what happens on the field of play. If players want to play, a referee's job is very easy."
