McGrath hoping for Dubs date

Clare's Shane McGrath. INPHO
Clare footballer Shane McGrath would relish the prospect of lining out against his native Dublin.

McGrath played an O'Byrne Cup game for the Dubs under Pat Gilroy's watch but switched his allegiances to the Banner County in 2012. Tomorrow, he will feature on the Clare side that does battle with Kildare in a Round 3B SF Qualifier in Ennis.

The Dundrum-based Garda says he'd love if Clare's championship run brought them as far as the defending All-Ireland champions:

"I suppose growing up the dream would have been to play with Dublin. I was born and bred in Dublin and I was always supporting the Dublin colours.

"With the form that they're in at the moment I don't think that many teams would be dreaming about playing against them. Personally, it would be nice to play against them but this year I think they're looking a formidable force again.

"But I made the decision to go down to Clare and I haven't regretted it for one second, there is a great bunch of lads there. So I'm happy there now, I'm half Clareman now at this stage.

"My father played with Clare for years and he finished up in 1991. In '92 they won Munster so he was a bit unlucky in that sense; I think he played for Clare for 15 years.

"There was a lot of slagging going on that he never got to play in a Munster final, and I made it less than a year into it."
