Winning start pleases Deegan

Selector Mike Deegan expressed contentment with Clare's facile win over Waterford IT in last Sunday's Waterford Crystal Cup opener.

"The boys played very well in the opening 20 minutes when they did a lot of what we asked of them. After 20 minutes, the game was over as we were completely on top," he told the Clare Champion afterwards.

"Waterford IT were missing a good few players but we can only worry about our performance. Our work-rate was very good and that is something we will be pushing for all the time. In fairness, we have been doing this in recent challenge games and in training."

The Cratloe man expects a much tougher test from Limerick in tomorrow night's quarter-final at Sixmilebridge which will be a dress rehearsal for the first round of the NHL in three weeks' time.

"Limerick, like ourselves, will be missing players because of college commitments. There is a rivalry between neighbouring teams and this should add to the interest in the game," he added.
