Mixed weekend for hurlers

January 20, 2012
Clare hurlers continued their build-up to the new season with two challenge matches against Westmeath and Galway last weekend.

On Saturday in Corofin, they defeated Brian Hanley's new-look Westmeath on a 2-22 to 1-12 scoreline. After an evenly contested first half, at the end of which Clare led 0-10 to 0-8, Cathal McInerney struck for two goals in the third quarter to send the home side on their way to a comfortable win.

Unfortunately for Davy Fitzgerald's men, they were forced to give second best to another team in maroon - Galway - on Sunday in Clarecastle. After leading 1-15 to 1-10 going into the final quarter, the Banner fell away badly in the closing stages with Galway eventually prevailing by 2-19 to 1-18.
