SHC: Round 5 preview

August 26, 2010
Group 1

Broadford v Scariff

A last chance for both sides to get into the senior B as the losing team here goes into the relegation play off's. It has been a year to forget for Broadford, bar the Clare Cup semi-final appearance, after the exploits of last year. While Scariff will also be disappointed with their year so far and will go into this game without injured duo Ross Horan and Michael Scanlan who was a Clare senior panellist for 2010. In their absence Brendan McNamara, Barry Murphy, Cathal and Diarmuid Nash, Conor McNamara and Alphie Rodgers will be expected to lead the Scariff charge. Meanwhile, Broadford will hope to have Padraig Hickey back from injury and this game could bring a first start of the 2010 championship for Stephen Gunning. The 2008 Intermediate champions will look to the likes of Craig and Cathal Chaplin, Aonghus and Peter O'Brien, Kevin Corcoran and James Gunning to provide inspiration. Expect Broadford to win this one particularly if Horan and Scanlan are ruled out.

Verdict: Broadford

Group 3

O'Callaghan's Mills v Smith O'Brien's

A result here for the Mills will see them reach the last eight while Smith O'Brien's need a result to steer them clear of a relegation play-off. The Mills have impressed this year and are fancied to win this one. Killaloe started off brightly by defeating Tulla but have lost to Whitegate and Newmarket since then. They will hope Whitegate can defeat Tulla to ensure they go through to the senior B. The Mills will look to Conor Cooney, the returning Patrick Donnellan, Adrian Flaherty, Adrian Donnovan, Diarmuid Hehir and team captain Bryan Donnellan. The likes of Shane O'Brien, Pat Vaughan, Liam and Kevin Walsh, John Cusack and Trevor Howard will spearhead the Killaloe charge. However, anything other than a Mills victory will be a surprise.

Verdict: O'Callaghan's Mills
