Senior hurling championship round 4 review

August 20, 2010
Following on from Tubber's victory over Cratloe last weekend, a number of games were contested during the week in round 3 of the Clare senior hurling championship.

On Tuesday evening in group 3, O'Callaghan's Mills saw off the challenge of Whitegate by 1-17 to 0-11 with Adrian Donovan in fine form from the full forward position with 1-5 over the hour. This result sees the Mills most likely to join Newmarket-on-Fergus from group 3 in the latter stages of the championship. The winners dominated throughout and led at the break 1-10 to 0-5 with Donovan getting his goal in the early stages.

Also on Tuesday evening last in group 4, Clonlara saw off the challenge of Crusheen by 1-10 to 0-12 in Cusack Park. The half time score was 0-9 to 1-6 with the Clonlara goal coming from the stick of teenager Cathal O'Connell on the stroke of half time. The game could have gone either way and in the 55th minute the Crusheen cause was not helped by the sending off, on a second yellow, of Cian Dillon. Indeed, O'Connell's goal proved to be decisive as his side march on to the quarter-finals.

The other game in group 4 on Tuesday evening saw St. Joseph's Doora/Barefield recover from a bad start to defeat Ballyea by 0-14 to 1-10. Shane O'Connor top scored for St. Joseph's with 0-7 while Gary Brennan got the Ballyea goal. This match was closely fought with Ballyea leading at the break by 1-7 to 0-4 but an excellent comeback from St. Joseph's gave them the victory.

Meanwhile on Wednesday evening Clarecastle saw off the challenge of Scariff by 0-17 v 0-9 in group 2. The Magpies were never in trouble and led at the break by 0-10 to 0-5 and they continued to hold the upper hand into the second half. In what was an excellent team performance five of the Clarecastle starting forwards getting on the scoreboard with Darragh Moloney impressing yet again this time with 0-4, all bar one coming from play.

The other group 2 game was also on Wednesday with Kilmaley defeating Broadford by 1-18 to 2-9. The winners were on top throughout and were up by 0-11 to 2-2 at half time. The Broadford goals came from Aonghus O'Brien and Craig Chaplin. Kilmaley had their goal from the stick of Daire Keane who finished the game with 1-3 while Diarmuid McMahon (0-5) and Colin Lynch (0-3) also made valuable contributions.

The action continues this weekend with two games down for decision. The clash of Sixmilebridge and Inagh-Kilnamona takes place in Cusack Park tomorrow (Saturday) at 5.15. The remaining group 3 game sees Newmarket-on-Fergus and Tulla do battle at Cusack Park on Sunday at 5.15.
