Meelick GAA Club Notes
March 08, 2010
Meelick junior footballers survived a late scare to take all the points in their season opener against Smith O'Brien. The game was filled with energy right from the start with both sides exchanging scores early on. However, it was Meelick who made the big break through with Brian O'Neill finishing clinically after good play from Gary Moloney. Meelick added more pints to their tally to give themselves a strong half time lead. Pat O'Rourke warned his players not to let their performance drop in the second half. As the game tightened up, it was Meelick again who made the break and Kenneth Keane score a fine goal after an excellent run from Luke Davis. Meelick were able to add more points to their lead in the closing stages with William O'Shaughnessy scoring the pick of the points on the day.
However, a gallant Smith O'Briens side scored a goal late on to set up a nervy finish. Some fine defensive play from Meelick in the closing stages ensured Meelick won on the day. Greg Daly, Stephen Hayes, Niall Mullen, Ian Griffin and Gary Kennedy all put very hard working displays for Meelick in the league opener for 2010 and Meelick will be confident of going on to challenge for the league title this year.
Meelick Team: Craig Madigan, Shane Daly, Sean Cooney, Gary Kennedy, Niall Mullen, Ian Griffin, Eanna Mulvihill, Stephen Hayes, Greg Daly, Gary Moloney, Mark Manning, William O'Shaughnessy, Luke Davis, Brian O'Neill, Kenneth Keane. Subs: Jason Boyce, Darragh Quinn, Eoghan Sheehan. The Under 16 footballers began their campaign and lost out to a strong Clooney-Quin side. John Callinan's team showed their technical ability however, Clooney proved to be more cut-throat with their chances. Nonetheless, the young Meelick team have a number of talented players in their panel and would be a most welcome addition to the men's team in the next year or so. Those to play well for Meelick on the day were Johnny Murphy, Colm O Brien and the two McCarthy brothers.
