Championship match marred by controversy

August 29, 2008
Even though both teams were already out of contention, the SFC clash of Miltown and O'Curry's became embroiled in controversy. Miltown ensured that they would not have to worry about relegation by taking the points on offer, but the disputed decisions and niggly incidents that marked the closing stages of the match took centre stage. Joe Curtin was credited with the winners' second goal twelve minutes after the restart, but O'Curry's insisted his shot had struck the crossbar. Bad tempers prevailed for the remainder of the match and the losers had their entire backroom team 'sent off'. After the final whistle, the players got involved in a bit of a brawl, leaving match referee Michael Fitzgerald with plenty to ponder before compiling his match report.
