Ulster Football since 2000

Antrim ~ good run in championship last year including appearing in a ulster final, football on the up in the county.
Armagh ~ numerous provincial titles, plus all ireland champs in 02.
Donegal ~ a few good runs in the all ireland qualifiers in memory serves me right.
Fermanagh ~ unlucky to lose ulster final 2 years, ago plus appeared in all ireland semi few years before that.
Tyrone ~ Tyrone best team in ireland over last decade. Lifted sam thrice.
Down ~ few ulster final apperances, all ireland final apperance this year and probaly will win.
Derry ~ nothing to exciting, few ulster final apperances, quality players, unlucky.
Monaghan ~ consistently good run in championship over last 5/6 years. Soon to be ulster champs
Cavan ~ good run in the mckenna cup in 02, or was it 04. Good hurling set up. Good Handball players. Exceptional sauce merchants.

Your spot on there. Donegal won the league a few years ago i think. So we the only county in Ulster going nowhere.
Think our problems run deeper than the Senior team.We havent won a minor since 1974. Thats disgracefull really. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
When you add the minor team of 74 and the st pats team of 72 we got to 2 ulster finals in 76 and 78 and were very unlucky in 76 after a replay.
So i think we need to start from scratch It will prob take 10 years all going well. We gota copy Tyrone in bring young players through.

The bottom line is i dont think the interest is there. I spoke to numerous ex players and numerous club officials from a few different clubs and the feedback i was getting is that nobody cares about County Team football any more. Thats sad.
I felt we needed a big name manager to give us the kick start we needed..Wait and see but there will be massive no from players this year if asked to join. Thats not because of the manager ,its because there is no interest in players starting from scratch. Wait and see.
We are bottom of the pile and its a long hard road aheadfor the next 10 years

a few of the u21 will be involved nexy more then likely and would be a big help.. bud fitzpatrick,g mckiernan, declan mckiernan, rory dunne, james mcenroe, barry reilly are players i would like to see get a run next year.. i dont think mossy corr will get a second year at full back,he was off the pace in a lot of games, dunne could be a better option there. bud fitz would be a great addition aswell. id like to see gavin duffy tried aswell if he has no injury problems,. i think barry reilly would make the senior team nexy year easily, but he will probaly stick with the u21s. lyng should also be back next year and cullivan if they want to play..they need to find another midfielder for givney.

don't agree that the talent is not their for cavan to make major strides in the next few years. just think of where monaghon was 6 years ago, stuck in div 4 & going nowhere. then they appointed mcEneaney & even though they got no silverware they are a established div 1 team & have reached 2 ulster finals & 2 last 12 appearances. so my point is that all counties have talent (also think of wicklow pre micko) its just a question of wether we have the right man to get the best out of our players

bond,

I have been saying the same thing for ages. The biggest crime that any poster can utter is "sure we haven't the players" !! Its a cop out for not having a proper system in place i.e good manager, trainer, scouts, coaching system, physios, underage system, facilities, etc etc and it all springs from having a good proactive county board !!

Yes Sean, players with big heads need to be brought down to earth !! The manager's job imo !! Is he strong enough to do it though ? Hope so !!

I am sure he will but I have no problems in saying this if he gets rid of most and brings in youth we will be well on the road to recovery.

At last Richiej, something we agree on. I have long been campaigning for a Professional Minor / U 21 Manager. Pete McGrath would fit the bill nicely. Unfortunately, Val will be working with players that have not tasted success previously. Statistically, he has a mountain to climb without a rope.
