Cavan v Westmeath

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Hopefully yesterday was the start of our summer. A one point against Westmeath is not earth shattering but it does give the team an opportunity to show what they can do. In my book the worst draw we could get tomorrow is Clare away. A home game against any of the other possible teams is the scenario that we should be looking for. Armagh (has to be a home fixture), Monaghan, Kildare and Roscommon are all teams that we owe a beating to.

One other point, after breaking onto the scene 10 years ago against Down in the Championship and after suffering so much with injury over the period it was nice to see Michael Lyng do so well yesterday!

i was very happy with the win but when we were well ahead i thought we should of brought on our subs and bring them in when we were well on top, rather than bringing them in when we were in trouble. in fairness we done well with none of our normal scoring forwards playing and we worked very hard to turn over the ball ,the only thing were slow to counter and that allows teams to get men back .

Foolsgold. i don,t think we could or can play like Dublin there at a different level at the minute, but at least aim for it, all i want to see is Cavan players let loose or as someone said there take the shackles off, allow all players to take a shot at a score not just certain players.we have some brillant defenders they need to have faith in them, we don,t need to be using the blanket defense , Martin Reilly spent most of the game yesterday in the corner back posistion, if they want to play a sweeper then play Moynagh as the sweeper who played that role with the u21 and with the juniors. i dont think givney works as a full forward and Argue didnt seem comforble as a half forward either, at least try pairing them in midfield together,, We have talented footballers in Cavan i just don't think that style of play suits them, in a period in the second half when players pushed forward we seen what they are capable of.

1610955 Look, nobody is deluded Fools gold. Fans are entitled to an opinion, remember that is all it is, an opinion, if you're forking out your hard earned money in these times to support our county team, you deserve to have a view and not to be called deluded or anything else. We're all Cavan fans here, and we all want the same objective.

Nobody is asking that we play like Dublin. That is out of the question. Meath or Monaghan are more of a template we should adapt, IN MY OPINION :)

Of course people are entitled to opion. They should be realistic too, Cavan played attacking footabll in the League final conceded 1-17 and lost by 2. Should they have been more defensive in that game?
In the Armagh game, Armagh played with 2 sweepers totally different scenario to playing against Roscommon and had no Mackey to dicate things.

I agree with Mickey Lyng that the win was more than a single point win, in that we made basic errors that led Westmeath back into the game. I don't think we're prone to those type of mistakes in fairness, and would expect a higher level of concentration the next time. i.e. this error is quickly fixable.

I think we're fortunate to have Lyng on form at the moment as Mackey is clearly not fit and was badly caught in possession twice when he came on.

I also agree with Shannon414 that David Givney's best position is wing forward. I recall him playing there in a league game against Louth when he was breaking in to the team and he was very effective with his strong running and ball carrying. He seems to thrive when he gets a bit of space.

I also believe that it was Michael Argue that led to our purple patch in the third quarter. He initiated the build up for the goal and scored a point shortly afterwards. He is becoming a very important player for us.

What I think would make a big difference to our style of play would be raising the pace and allowing our lads, assuming they can, to take on a man at pace and get past him to create and develop an overlap. We're far to content to stop in our tracks and pass the ball sideways or backwards. This is the reason why our play is so slow. To survive in Div 2 and get into Div 1, we will need to be capable of this all over the field.
