Cornafean club notes

September 26, 2016

Well done to both Cornafean and Castlerahan teams who served up an entertaining game in Breffni Park on Tuesday evening last. It was definitely a game of two halves as there was nothing to choose between the teams in the first half but cornafean went goal crazy in the second period to run out deserved winners. Ronan O'Rourke opened the scoring for the Reds with a neat point but Castlerahan replied immediately with a Jake Brady free. Goals were then exchanged with the impressive Oisin Brown opening for the Reds Account but the dangerous Patrick Slowey replied for Castlerahan. In their next attack Ronan O'Rourke blasted to the net but the Castlerahan men replied with points from Luke Caldwell and Patrick Slowey. Oisin Brown who was tormenting the Castlerahan defence scored the next 3 points for the Reds but a goal and a point from the impressive Caldwell plus a point from Adam Hogan put the lads in Maroon a point in front after 15 minutes. The remainder of the half was nip and tuck with both teams giving it their all. Reds midfielder Aaron Smith was next to hit the net but again Castlerahan had a major of their own from dangerous forward Patrick Slowey. Once again the Reds replied with a great R. O'Rourke goal but two points each from Jack Hogan and the dangerous Caldwell left Castlerahan 3 points in front at the break on a scoreline of Reds 4-4 Castlerahan 3-10 and all to play for in second half. The Reds got the first two scores of the second half with a point from excellent midfielder Aaron smith and another goal from the best forward on the pitch Oisin Brown and for the remainder of the match and to the delight of the Cornafean supporters the team went on a goal spree. Aaron Smith team captain scored a hatrick of majors, Diarmaid Martin chipped in with a beauty and then the flying corner forward Conor Kilkenny got in on the act with his own hatrick of great goals.  Unfortuantely Castlerahan were overrun by a rampant Reds in the second half and were only able to reply with one goal. Final Score - Cornafean 12-6 Castlerahan 4-10.

Cormac Doyle was a safe pair of hands in the goals with the backs of Trevor Sheridan, Diarmaid Martin, James Clarke and Joshua Griffith all playing their part in the rear guard.  Aaron Smith and Conor Brady dominated the midfield sector and up front Ronan O'Rourke, Oisin McGahern, Conor Kilkenny and Oisin Browne were excellent all contributing to the scoreboard over the course of the game.  Subs Sean McFaul, Ryan Daly, James Flood and Kevin Smith played their part when introduced.  A big thank you to Brian, Killian and Kevin on all their hard work and dedication to the team over the course of the year.

CORNAFEAN NEWS

Junior Champions - It was a very proud day to be a Red in Breffni Park on Sunday last as Cornafean were crowned Junior County Champions for 2016 on a scoreline of Cornafean 1-16 Ballymahugh 0-11.  Congratulations to the players and the management team of Lawrence, Sean and Neal on their fantastic effort all year and wha they achieved for their club on Sunday was richly deserved.  Whether it was the defeat by Templeport last year or not, there is no doubt the Reds were on a mission on Sunday and were not leaving Breffni Park without the Sean Leddy Cup.  To a man, subs included, everyone played their part and when inspirational captain Dan Wharton lifted the Cup at 5 p.m. it was just reward for the teams' efforts all year.  Huge crowds welcomed the Reds back to Cornafean on Sunday evening as piper Sean Kelly led the victorious team home and club chairman Eamon Gaffney introduced the panel to the delighted crowds of supporters and well wishers.  Needless to say the celebrations went on late into the night.
