Improving the lot of the club player remains a target for GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail.

The Cavan man insisted that the imbalance between the club player and the county player needs to be addressed in a wide-ranging interview in today's The Irish News.

"I've said it before, it needs to be addressed and I'm working very strongly in that direction. I've two more years as president and I hope to continue down that road.

"The balance at the moment is not fair in the direction of the club player. You have to put your focus somewhere and my focus is very much on the club player.

"I think the inter-county game is very important and it's hugely significant for the GAA. But I think too many people, including those that do criticise us, only see the inter-county game.

"I see it from travelling the country… by far the most important aspect of the GAA, and the most vibrant, is the club scene.

"I think at the moment our inter-county game is fine, good and safe. It does need to be condensed, as it is too long. It is drawn out and we don't need more inter-county games.

"But we certainly need more space for clubs. We are moving and we are moving well in that direction."
