Hyland: intercounty footballers should be comfortable anywhere on the pitch

Cavan manager Terry Hyland says county footballers should be capable of delivering in a variety of positions.

The versatile Breffni County have slotted eleven points from play in each of their league outings so far and Hyland expects players at this level to be able to adapt:

"People tell you that you have defenders and you have forwards but at intercounty level a back should be as comfortable when he gets in front of goal as a forward," he states in The Irish News.

"That goes back to the underage skill sets that have been taught. Perhaps we in the GAA pigeon-hole guys a little bit too much and sometimes don't allow them to express themselves.

"It goes back to the systems we've been using with these lads for the last three or four years, moving them up and down.

"We're still creeping through to where we want to be, in one sense, but the lads are getting to know the systems. They're getting more comfortable no matter where they're playing, and that's the main thing.

"We don't have some lad thrown in completely out of the blue and asked to do something that is alien to him. It's about practice, practice, practice."
