Cootehill's Caoimhin Carney

Caoimhin Carney of St Aidan's, Cootehill made history this week when becoming the first ever Cavan hurler to win an Ulster Colleges All-Star award.

The Cootehill student was honoured after impressing at two trial days at Queens University.

His school hurling coach Gabriel McQuillan told The Anglo Celt: "The standard was extremely high at the trials but Caoimhin played really well, he scored 0-3 in the first game and 1-1 in the second one, and set up a lot of scores as well.

"He absolutely deserves the honour because he puts in a massive effort. He is very, very skilful and is a great ambassador for Cavan hurling."

St Aidan's vice-principal Niall Magee added: "It's a tremendous honour for Caoimhin and his family and also for the school.

"He's an oustanding sportsman and we're very, very proud of him. It's a huge achievement."
