New Cavan Gaels boss Peter Canavan

Cavan Gaels' record in the Ulster Club SFC leaves a lot to be desired but Peter Canavan is hoping to change that in the weeks ahead.

The Tyrone great will patrol the sideline when the Breffni champions take on Slaughtneil of Derry on Sunday weekend and, speaking to The Belfast Telegraph, he said: "We want to give this Ulster Club Championship a real good rattle.

"What has happened in the past must stay there. We have to move on and I believe that the present Cavan Gaels side has the ability and the incentive to make progress.

"We are only focused on Slaughtneil, that's as far as it goes. They have followed a tough road to become Derry champions but that could stand to them."

Canavan will demand improvement from his players who edged out 14-man Kingscourt by a point in the county decider.

"I thought the lads showed great hunger in the Cavan final when Michael Lyng's late point got us over the line.

"We have to be prepared to show even greater intensity in the Ulster club series because there are a number of real quality sides in there and any one of which could land the title."
