Nothing wrong with Ulster football, insists Farrell

Ulster Council President Aogan Farrell
Aogan Farrell has launched a stout defence of the Ulster SFC, describing it as "one of the jewels in the GAA crown".

The Ulster Council chairman's comments after new GAA president Liam O'Neill's recently caused a storm by saying aspects of the modern game were "boring".

"Ulster is a fantastic championship," the Cavan man said at the Ulster SFC launch in Belfast on Tuesday night.

"Last year we had eight games. In those eight games we had 17 goals and 173 points. That's a massive amount of scoring. That's 2-22 per match. That's a fair old average. Donegal in the Ulster final scored exactly that average, they scored 1-11.

"We've got a game with lots of events and lots of excitement. You won't get to sing 20 verses of a song on the terrace because there is a score average every minute and 45 seconds. That's a huge part of the appeal of our championship."
