Cavan Gaels club notes

April 30, 2012
Division One
Our division one team got back on the winning track when they registered a comprehensive victory away to Redhills on Sunday afternoon last. Well done to players, management and officials.

Division Two
Our division two team had Denn as visitors on Sunday afternoon last. This game was played in a gale force wind which had a huge bearing on the standard of play. We had the benefit of the elements in the first half but failed totally to adapt our play to maximise the benefits of wind advantage. We only had a one point lead at halftime which was never going to be enough. Gradually Denn went into the lead and they emerged as deserving winners.

Féile
A series of fundraising events have been organised to help defray the high cost of competing in this year's féile in Laois-Offaly on 22-24 June for which we have qualified. A very successful Table Quiz was held in the Farnham Hotel on Wednesday last. On Saturday last there was a bucket collection in Cavan town and on Friday 11 May a Race Night will be held in McMahon's Café Bar. Thanks to the parents for their encouragement and support. Thanks to all those who organised the quiz, to those who took part in the quiz and to those who were involved in the bucket collection.

Under-12
Our under-12s are showing great promise in the spring league. Well done to all concerned.

Under-16
Our under-16s will play Blackwater Gaels in Mountnugent on Sunday next. The time for the game has yet to be confirmed.

Brock Cup
Best of luck to our two players, Paul Sexton and James Veale, and to all the Saint Patrick's College players who are playing in the Brock Cup final against Abbey CBS in Clones on Wednesday 2 May at 3pm.

Girls' Football
On Wednesday last our under-14s recorded a landmark victory against Arva, the first ever for a girls' team in the club's history. This was truly a team effort in the driving rain. Team captain, Hannah McHugh, set the tone with two early goals before retiring injured. The other players responded magnificently and duly earned their place in club history.
On Saturday last our under-12s were away to Killygarry. We led at half-time thanks to four first half goals from Amy Gardiner. Despite our valiant efforts we failed to contain a strong Killygarry side in the second half. Our players, however, did themselves proud. Special mention must go to our goalkeeper, Lauren Smith, for her amazing display.
Training continues for under-12s and under-14s in Terry Coyle Park on Tuesdays from 6-7.30. New members always welcome. For further information contact Peter Sexton on 086-1760420.

Friends of Cavan Gaels
Friends of Cavan Gaels was launched at a function in the Farnham Arms Hotel on bank holiday Monday. Friends of Cavan Gaels has been launched as a vehicle to help fund our proposed Five Year Plan to develop our facilities in Terry Coyle as we endeavour to cater for all the boys' and girls' football teams, our boys' hurlers, our camogie team as well as our adult teams. Already work has been done on our main pitch. It is proposed to build a new club house with the latest facilities. You can become a Friend of Cavan Gaels and be a part of the club's exciting future by signing a direct debit form or, as some have done already, by giving a lump sum payment in
support of our project. There has already been a very positive response from other clubs, inside and outside the county, and from present and past members both at home, throughout Ireland and indeed abroad. See Friends of Cavan Gaels facebook page for more details. See also www.friendsofcavangaels.com A new logo has been designed for the newly-established Friends of Cavan Gaels.
It is hoped to contact as many as possible of former Cavan Gaels players, at home and abroad, in connection with the proposed developments.
Brochures, detailing the planned developments and the various methods of payment, will be distributed soon.

Camogie
Hard luck to our camogie team who were defeated by a much stronger Redhills team in Redhills on Saturday evening last.

Golf Classic
Our annual golf classic will take place in County Cavan golf club on Friday 13 July.

Under-10
Parents and players are asked to note that there will be a series of these under-10 blitzes in the near future. Denn club will host an under-10 blitz on Saturday 12 May. Details later.

Bingo
Our bingo will take place as usual on Friday next in the Town Hall at 9pm. Thanks to all those who so loyally continue to support our bingo.

Merchandise
A large and varied selection of club merchandise- jackets, hoodies, t-shirts, jerseys etc- is available from Greg Sheridan, our merchandise officer. Gift vouchers can also be purchased. Greg will be in Terry Coyle Park on Saturday mornings between 11 and 1. He can be contacted on 087-2283945.

Under-Age Coaching
Our under-age coaching for our under-8s, under-10s and under-12s continues on Saturday mornings in Terry Coyle Park at 11 o clock.

1915 Medal
An interesting medal has come to hand. It is a 1915 Cavan junior championship medal with the name Patrick Brady inscribed on it. Cavan Slashers won the junior title in 1915 defeating Crosserlough by 1-3 to 1-2 in Gowna. Patrick Brady lined out at midfield for the Slashers. Anyone who might know something about this Patrick Brady is asked to phone 086-1005303.

Information on Club Successes
A reminder to people that a very comprehensive account of all the Cavan Gaels senior championship successes is available, courtesy of Mícheál Smyth, on the Cavan CYMS website cavancyms.com Click on "About Us" and then on " Published" and you will see the relevant link. Also included is an account of all the Cavan Slashers senior championship wins and all of Cavan's All-Ireland victories. Mícheál's research also covers the Cavan Gaels under-age successes as well as all the victories of Cavan Harps.

Bréifne Abú
Congratulations to George Cartwright on his recent publication Bréifne Abú, a veritable cornucopia of records of Cavan football, hurling and handball during the period 1886 and 2011. It is an invaluable reference book and the product of many years of research. It will settle many an argument and will be a boon for quiz question setters. This book should especially appeal to the Cavan diaspora.
