A tasty business

November 27, 2011
Dinkin's Home Bakery & Café brought its number of Co. Cavan shops to three with the opening of their latest outlet in Cavan Bus Station last December. The award-winning family-run business now has a presence in no fewer than eight towns in counties Cavan and Monaghan.

The recession hasn't stopped Dinkin's Home Bakery & Café from expanding its business interests in the border region. Established over 35 years ago by Anthony and Margaret Dinkin in Monaghan town, the company now has eight outlets throughout counties Cavan and Monaghan. It also has a large bakery and recently opened a new restaurant 'Taste of Tuscany' in Church Square, Monaghan.

Dinkin's Co. Monaghan outlets are located in Monaghan town (Church Square), Castleblayney, Carrickmacross, Ballybay and Clones. They opened their first Co. Cavan shop in Cootehill about five years ago and since then have opened further outlets in Belturbet and in Cavan Bus Station where extensive renovation work has been carried out.
"We took over the franchise from Bus Eireann last December and gave the shop an overhaul last March," April Dinkin explains.
"It's a busy spot and we're happy with how things are going. All of our shops are doing well and long may it continue to be the case."

April is a daughter-in-law of owners Anthony and Margaret Dinkin, being married to their son and baker Kristen. All of the Dinkin family are involved in the business, which employs 40 staff between the eight outlets and bakery.
Specialising in cakes, confectionary and home baked breads, Dinkin's have used their wealth of experience and knowledge to create and perfect their secret age-old recipes. Their delicious cakes, goodies and speciality breads are freshly baked daily in their bakery in Monaghan town and they pride themselves on using only the finest ingredients, locally sourced where possible.

Each shop has a well-stocked bakery and a warm and inviting café. They can bake cakes for all occasions, including wedding cakes, christening cakes, anniversary and retirement cakes, holiday themed cakes as well as birthday cakes for boys, girls, ladies and gentlemen. Dinkin's specialise in creating unique and handcrafted cakes for your special occasion.
Other favourites include homemade Madeiras and sponges, personalised cakes, chocolate cakes, fresh cream cakes, logs and bracks, pies and tarts, home baked breads, Gi multiseed bread and Avena oat bread.
"We can make cakes for any occasion," April says.

"As you can imagine, wedding cakes are always popular and that is Margaret's area of expertise. Margaret is originally from Scotstown, but has been living in Monaghan town since she and Anthony started the business.
"We also specialise in home baked breads and have won awards for our bread. All our recipes are scratch recipes, which means there are no additives, flavours or artificial ingredients. Everything is made by hand every morning in our bakery."
All cakes can be tailored to your own personal requirements, be it the choice of flavour, size or decoration. Dinkin's have a wide range of cake choices - butter cream and fresh cream sponges, homemade plain and flavoured Madeira, luxury fudge cakes, fruity gateaux, Bailey's sponges, Belgian chocolate biscuit cake, carrot cakes and rich fruit cakes are just some of the choices available. They bake a wide range of cake sizes to suit all requirements from 10 to 500 portions. A large selection of cakes can be viewed on Dinkin's website, www.dinkinsbakery.com.

All cakes are hand finished with a personalised message and decoration. For a really special finishing touch, you can add on an edible icing disc of a special photo or of your favourite cartoon character or personality. Make your cake stand out by adding a novelty and keepsake item to add the 'wow' factor.

Dinkin's Home Bakery & Cafes continue to set the standards and constantly strive to improve their service and quality of products. This has been reflected in the winning of prestigious awards. Their homemade wheaten bread recently took gold in the Great Taste Awards, while their Carrickmacross, Belturbet and Monaghan town outlets received Happy Heart Awards from the Irish Heart Foundation for providing healthy low fat food.

In addition, Dinkin's Monaghan town outlet in Church Square won the Tidy Towns Best Restaurant Award in 2009.
Dinkin's is an ideal place to meet with family and friends and you can relax with a speciality coffee and a tasty treat, or if you fancy something more substantial, a wide range of satisfying snacks and meals are available. All their products are available for takeaway and if you are stuck for time, feel free to ring ahead and they will arrange to make up your order fresh from scratch and have it ready for you to collect when you want.

Dinkin's would like to take this opportunity to wish Cavan and Monaghan GAA the very best in 2012. Whenever Monaghan or Cavan are going well, we always make sure to have the blue and white flags up!"
