CWD helping to keep Cavan tidy

November 27, 2011
From humble beginnings, Cavan Waste Disposal (CWD) has grown into the largest operator in the domestic waste sector in Co. Cavan. Facility manager Charlie Galligan is proud of the company's efforts to make Cavan a cleaner and better place to live in, and of its strong connections with the local GAA scene.

Established in the early 1990s by husband and wife Gerard and Anna-Marie Cullivan, Cavan Waste Disposal is now recognised as the number one waste management company in the Breffni County.

Specialising in domestic, corporate and commercial waste as well as skip hire and recycling, the company's goal is to constantly introduce new standards and services to its extensive customer-base, which now extends well into the surrounding counties of Leitrim, Westmeath, Leitrim, Meath and Monaghan. Part of the Oxigen Group since 2003, Cavan Waste Disposal prides itself on being one of the most forward-thinking and innovative waste management companies in the country, and on being at the forefront of the drive to promote environmental awareness and create a healthy, sustainable living environment.

"The company has grown from a small family-run business that employed four or five staff to a large-scale operation which now employs 44," explains facility manager Charlie Galligan, who is a brother of Anna-Marie Cullivan and has worked with CWD since 1995.

"While we've been operating under the Oxigen Environmental umbrella for the past eight years, the company has retained its family values. Like any other business, we're living in more challenging times now. There was a huge demand for our services at the height of the construction boom, but that has come and gone and much of our focus is now on household and commercial waste.

"We also place a huge emphasis on recycling and the task of diverting waste away from landfill. Our domestic and commercial skip hire service is also holding up strong."
Based in Killygarry Industrial Park on the outskirts of Cavan town and the only private waste company in Cavan to have its own EPA-licensed facility, Cavan Waste Disposal provides a full range of domestic, commercial and industrial waste management solutions. The company offers refuse collections to all parts of Co. Cavan as well as to parts of the surrounding counties.

This is a two-bin service comprising a black bin for general waste and a green bin for dry recyclable materials. The bins are available in sizes from 140 litres to 360 litres. Commercial bins vary in size from 140 litres to 1,100 litres.
Skip hire services include skips, roll-on roll-off containers and compactors varying in size from 6 to 40 cubic yards. The company also offers a glass collection service to pubs and hotels as well as a designated cardboard collection and a confidential shredding service, making it a one-stop shop for all your waste management needs.

In addition, Cavan Waste Disposal is fully committed to recycling and being environmentally green. Many of the items used in your home on a daily basis that end up in your bin each week can be recycled. The benefits of recycling include a cleaner environment, the safe disposal of hazardous materials, greater awareness of excess packaging and a more careful approach to the way in which you use and re-use materials. By recycling your domestic waste, you are reducing the volume of waste going into landfill sites.

CWD is proud to be part of the Oxigen Group, which was founded in 1987 by Sean Doyle and has grown into a nationwide operation. Originally known as Wheel Bin Services, the company began collecting waste from domestic and commercial customers in Co. Louth. As it developed and expanded its operations, it was re-branded Oxigen in 2000. Since then, the Group's services have expanded throughout Ireland. Oxigen now manages the waste streams of up to 100,000 domestic, commercial and industrial customers in an environmentally efficient manner.

In conjunction with Cavan County Council, Cavan Waste Disposal was responsible for the major clean-up operation that took place during and after the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Cavan town for the past two years.
"We had over 200,000 visitors to Cavan for the Fleadh Cheoil so there was a lot more litter around than usual. In order to have the town presentable each day, the clean-up operation began each morning at 4 o'clock. It was a huge undertaking, but the favourable comments we received made it all worthwhile," he says.

"Overall, I believe Co. Cavan is winning the battle against waste. Cavan County Council is very pro-active in this regard and this is reflected in the fact that it continues to score highly on the Litter League tables."
Cavan Waste Disposal and Oxigen enjoy close ties with the local GAA scene, counting many clubs among its customers and include many players of different GAA codes on their staff. As well as sponsoring the Reserve Division 1, 2 and 3 Leagues in Cavan, Oxigen sponsor a number of GAA clubs around the country.

Charlie himself is a staunch GAA man, being a former secretary and chairman of the Crosserlough club. He is currently chairman of the Crosserlough camogie club. As well as contesting this year's Ulster Senior C championship final against Cushendall Co Antrim, Crosserlough represented Cavan in the All-Ireland Feile na nGael finals in Loughrea, Co. Galway after winning an Ulster Feile title in Tyrone. Crosserlough had no fewer than 12 players on this year's Cavan under fourteen panel and is, without doubt, one of the strongest camogie units in the Breffni County at the present time.

Following their relegation last year, the Crosserlough men had high hopes of winning this year's IFC final, but it wasn't to be as they lost the final to Drumgoon by a single point, 1-7 to 0-11.
"It was disappointing not to go straight back up because that would have been the goal at the start of the year," he ruefully reflects.

"Bernard Morris and Padraig Donohue put a lot of work into the team, but they just fell short in the end. Hope springs eternal, however, and I've no doubt that Crosserlough will be back senior before too long. Crosserlough has a huge tradition and remains the only club in Cavan to have won a seven-in-a-row of senior football championships.
"The under 13s won a county title this year, so there's definitely hope for the future."
Like all Cavan supporters, Charlie - who lived in the US for seven years - took tremendous encouragement from the achievements of the county under 21, minor and ladies football teams in 2011.

"It's fair to say they have put the pride back into Cavan football. We have some outstanding minor and under 21 players coming through and hopefully they'll be able to take the next step and make good seniors now. But the big challenge is to hold on to them. With the economy the way it is, some of them might have to emigrate and that would be a pity because I think we have the makings of a strong senior team over the next few years," he concludes.
