CCCC to intervene in Johnston transfer row

Cavan's Seanie Johnston
The Kildare county board and Straffan club St. Kevin's will have to prove that Seanie Johnston is living in the county on a permanent basis in order for his transfer from Cavan to be approved by Croke Park.

Cavan officials, who refused to sign the forward's transfer form on Monday night, have asked the CCCC to intervene amid doubts about his place of residence. Johnston insists he is living in Straffan, Co. Kildare, but the CCCC are now expected to look for substantive proof of his residence in the Shortgrass County, such as household bills and a rental agreement.

Cavan PRO Declan Woods told the Irish News his board had no reason to believe that Johnston was living permanently in Kildare.

"We have looked at the form and as far as we are concerned, we have no evidence to support the fact that Sean Johnston lives in Kildare," he said.

"The Sean Johnston that we know teaches in Breifne College in Cavan, and lives in Cavan. We didn't look for evidence. We haven't launched an investigation or staked out his house because we don't have to do that.

"We see him every day in Cavan because he teaches in Cavan. We hear that he is going in and out of shops. We hear he is doing the normal day-to-day things. As a result of that, we have seen nothing to make us think that his not living in Cavan. That is why we haven't signed the form."
