Still battling away
December 30, 2010
In 2010, Woodford Gaels were denied a league and championship double by county kingpins Mullahoran St Joseph's at the final stages of both competitions.
At the end of July, the Ballyconnell-based side fell to a huge 4-23 to 1-5 defeat in the 11- a-side league final, with the goals of Ronan O'Hagan and Dominic Rudden proving their undoing as St Joe's claimed another title at their expense.
In the county senior championship final, the two sides would do battle again at Kingspan Breffni Park and it was the Gaels that made the sharper start through centre-forward Trent Fitzpatrick firing over inside the first two minutes.
That was about as good as it got for the amalgamated side though, as the defending champions came back strong with two goals and a barrage of unanswered points to lead by a commanding 2-8 to 0-1 at half-time. In the second-half, a point from dual veteran Daithi Neary was about the only highlight for the Gaels as Mullahoran would run-out comfortable 3-16 to 0-2 winners
