Obelisk: the winning formula
December 30, 2010
For the past 14 years the Obelisk Group has striven to be a leader in its many fields of expertise and the Cavan based company has certainly achieved many of its goals.
For the 2010 edition of the Breffni Blue Yearbook, we profile this successful business and take a look at its history, success and the impact it has on the local community.
The company was established by Longford natives Padraig Brady and Colm Murphy, two keen GAA supporters, who have helped support their local club Dromard for the past six years.
However, the Obelisk Group is very much a Cavan company and from its headquarters in the Cavan Business Park, this multi-national firm have grown from strength to strength over the intervening years.
The initial aim of Obelisk was and is to deliver high quality technical infrastructure to the mobile telecommunications industry and that has been achieved to a very high standard, while the company has now expanded into other areas and Obelisk Networks, Obelisk Energy, High Point and W.M.I are now all sister companies.
Specialising in telecommunications for many years, the company entered the renewable energy industry with huge success.
Each has emerged as major player in its field of expertise: Obelisk Energy is a leading supplier of high quality energy solutions and maintenance services to renewable energy operators and utilities alike. Expert project management, experienced competent people and total dedication make them a very strong and reliable supplier. This coupled with their commitment to health and safety, protecting our environment and high quality, ensures that they deliver unrivalled service.
Highpoint is a Wireless Infrastructure provider to the Irish Telecommunications and Broadcast industries. Working closely with all licensed operators, they identify and implement coverage and capacity solutions to maximise return on their investment.
W.M.I provides the very latest industry approved anemometry services in the design, supply and erection of wind measurement infrastructure including masts, towers and logging equipment. They also offer a data collection and analysis service, as well as a full maintenance plan.
Not only is the Obelisk Group a nationwide company with offices in Cavan, Dublin, Belfast and Portlaoise, but offices in the U.K, South Africa and Australia reveal that this business is a growing concern.
The company's success has been rewarded also and in October this year, Obelisk Group were awarded a prestigious national health and safety award at the National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) and Padraig admitted at the event that they were delighted with the recognition.
"Health and Safety is something we take very seriously within the company and I am delighted that our extremely high standards have been publicly acknowledged," he stated.
"I would like to extend my congratulations to our health and safety team and everyone else in Obelisk who helped us win this accolade."
This was the latest in a long list of awards obtained by the company at local, national and international level, which includes winning two awards at the World Young Business Achievers competition held in Warsaw, Poland in 2001.
With over 200 highly trained staff at Obelisk, such an award is a testament to the hard work and dedication that the firm have continued to produce on a daily basis.
Like all good gaelic football teams, Obelisk Group know that if the right effort is put into a project then the benefits will be plentiful.
Through their know how, Obelisk have been involved in floodlight projects for numerous GAA grounds including county champions Kingscourt's own O'Raghallaigh Park. It is an area that they have huge experience in.
Charity work is also something that is very close to Padraig and Colm's heart and this year, the company signed a three-year commitment to raise funds for UNICEF Ireland.
An employee fundraiser was held in Cavan by Obelisk and the company has stated that it will match any money raised by its employees and Padraig is delighted to be involved in such a worthwhile initiative.
"We are thankful to all our employees for helping us raise this money as well as supporting such a worthy cause. To us this is all about helping the children who are unable to receive the support every child deserves. It is about building on our corporate social responsibility by giving something back."
This year may not have been the greatest for the Cavan footballers; they exited the Ulster championship at the first hurdle when Fermanagh got the better of them on a day when it looked as if the Breffni men would go through.
The highlight of the year came when they made an amazing comeback from eight points down and with 13-men on the field to defeat Wicklow in the qualifiers in what was certainly the comeback of the season and one that left the Garden County in a state of shock.
However, if the Wicklow result was a high then the season was brought to an abrupt end when Cavan travelled to Cork for round two of the qualifiers. It was a rude awakening for the Ulster side as the soon to be All-Ireland champions ended their campaign in ruthless fashion.
That result brought an end to Tommy Carr's reign as manager and he has been replaced by fellow Dubliner Val Andrews together with Terry Hyland and already there is an air of optimism within the county that in 2011 they could make a big impression on the Ulster championship.
Many of the Obelisk staff will be hoping this is the case and if the Cavan footballers follow the same work ethic as one of the top businesses in the country then they won't go too far wrong next year.
