U21: Redbridge edge into last four
November 24, 2009
Redbridge 1-8
Ballymachugh-Lacken 1-5
Redbridge (Redhills & Butlersbridge) advanced to the semi-final of the Division 1 Under 21 Championship with victory over Ballymachugh-Lacken last Sunday in Lacken.
Despite the heavy rain both preceding and during the game the pitch held up well, although the going was very slippery underfoot. Redbridge had a strong wind in their favour in the first half, but it was the hosts who scored first in the ninth minute with a point from play by Stephen Brady. Packie Leddy levelled from a 45 metre free in the 11th minute.
The wind seemed more of a hindrance than a help to Redbridge, and neither side scored again for 12 minutes. Redbridge retained most of the possession, but sent a total of 8 attempts wide of the target, while a goal shot from Joe Callan was saved. Callan did however take the next score, a point in the 23rd minute. Leddy and Diarmuid Mulvey added further scores before the break.
A good effort from full forward Niall McKiernan rebounded of the upright to deny Ballymachugh-Lacken a second point in the 29th minute. At half-time the scores were Ballymachugh-Lacken 0-1, Redbridge 0-4.
Redbridge had two points more in as many minutes at the start of the second half. Diarmuid Mulvey passed to danger-man Callan in the first minute, and he sent over with ease against the wind. Then a Mark Kelly pass to Oisin Minagh saw Minagh score with equal ease.
Realising that the game was slipping beyond their grasp, Ballymachugh-Lacken finally found a higher gear, and their "purple patch" lasted for the next 12 minutes. Phil Moynagh sent over from play on 3 minutes, then a fisted clearance from the Redbridge keeper was caught by Niall McKiernan and he blasted the ball to the net.
Soon afterwards Moynagh brought the sides level, and substitute Owen Donohoe sent the home side ahead with a point in the 11th minute. However the local amalgamation failed to capitalise on their lead, sending three attempts wide in the next three minutes, and in fact they failed to score for the remainder of the game. In reply a Packie Leddy free in the 15th minute was well aimed towards Joe Callan, and Callan's shot brought the sides level again.
A 19th minute attempt on goal from 'bridge corner back Paddy Flynn went narrowly wide. The 'bridge men continued to attack and persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Diarmuid Mulvey shot to the net from close quarters. Leddy sent over the last score of the game in the 25th minute with a well-taken free from the ground. The home side could no longer find any way through a very strong Redbridge defence.
