Second Cavan ref assaulted in matter of months

October 12, 2008
A Cavan referee has been assaulted after a minor football match just five months after another ref was assaulted after taking charge of a senior league game in the county. Drumalee clubman Mickey Lee was shoulder charged by a player at the end of a local minor match involving Crosserlough and amalgamation side Redbridge (Redhills-Butlersbridge). The assault by a Crosserlough player left the 34 year old official dazed but otherwise unhurt. The Crosserlough club mentors present at the match apologised to Lee immediately after the incident but the club has since been fined 2,000 euros by Cavan County Board and their minor team suspended from all competition for 12 weeks. Lee's assault comes five months after referee Gerry Sheridan (Mullahoran) was assaulted by a Ballinagh supporter in mid-June after a senior league game against Killygarry.
