Droichead Ui Dalaigh Mount Nugent gaa Newsletter Weekending 28st Sept 2008 Issue No 37 We're in the FINAL !!!!! Junior Championship Semi Final Mountnugent 2-15 v's Templeport 0-7 by Noeleen Douglas On the 1st sunny day of the "Summer" it was a convoy that departed Mountnugent to fill the strands of Breffni park in support for the senior Gaelic football team in the high tension semi final against opposition Templeport. As the Mountnugent boys took to the field they were met with rapturous reception from club supporters proud to be at this stage in the championship, and they were not going to be disappointed. Mountnugent won possession from the off and within the 1st minute R.Caffrey received a pass from D.Givney and secured a point, this was closely followed not a minute later by E.Smith with support play from G.Patterson and it was Mountnugent two pints ahead in three minutes. Templeport were struggling from the first whistle and seemed that nerves were playing a part in their play with a wide starting off their work at the business end of the Mountnugent goals, this continued to be the case fort eh next 11 minutes of play. Full forward R.Caffrey and centre half forward D.Givney were in tune with the pace of play and again a nice lay of from Givney to Caffrey put Mountnugent three up. mid fielder's T.Brady and G.Patterson were winning ball in the centre of the field and despite the hard hitting nature of the game they remained undeterred, in the 7th minute of play T.Brady won possession and with an accurate ball sent to D.Givney it was a solid set up to bury the ball in the back of the net, supporters took to their feet and began to see that Mountnugent were dominating and with the idea of a final sinking through as the managers and trainers tried to settle the players to focus as Mountnugent supporters were intoxicated by the strong play and team tactics they were witnessing. Full Forward A.Garry took a beautiful high ball and concerted a point in the 8th minute and with excellent defensive work on the back line from J.Adams, R.Duffy and R.Kearney it seemed like Templeport were unable to penetrate the Mountnugent defence. Mountnugent were 1-4 up with 13 minutes gone and with Templeport desperate to notch up a score they were only ablr to produce two further wides into the 15th minute of play. With half the 1st half gone Mountnugent were ahead with confidence and with the skilled play of C.Adams and D.Sheridan they continued to dominate. Templeport were awarded a free in the 16th minute and succeeded in a score putting them on the board at long last, a minute later this pattern replayed itself and with their second score from free Templeport were trying to claw their was back into this semi final. Mountnugent captain R.Kearney made an opening from the full back position and made a run up field scoring a point from the 20 yard line. With the score now at 1-5 to 0-2 Mountnugent were in full control of the game. Templeport picked up steam and began attacking the Mountnugent back line to try to score against keeper J.Givney however T.O'Shea who was the keeper's right hand man on the day defended with skill and allowed no score. Mountnugent were on a target with scores from E.Smith in the 24th minute and a high ball delivery from E.Reilly in the 26th which was followed by two pints from C.Caffrey in injury time. Mountnugent man, E.Smith was to have the last say for the half with an excellently delivered point in the 33rd minute and as the half time whistle went it was all eyes to the score board as Mountnugent were 1st half victors with 1-10 to 0-2. The much repeated words of manager J.Lynch revved up the spirits an determination of the Mountnugent side and as they took to the field that it was theirs for the taking. It had an immediate effect with an early point in the opening seconds and a goal taken by D.Givney from a pass by R.Caffrey which sealed the fate of Mountnugent. Templeport were left with it all to and they never gave up with points scored in the 5th, 7th and 12th minute. But it was to be Mountnugent's day with strong teamwork and strong lines across the play Mountnugent's moves were fluid. With the final in sights it was an opportunity to introduce fresh legs to the field and the introduction to play of J.Brady, G.Barkey, M.Hennessey and C.Garry it was a sealed deal. With scores in the closing moments from R.Caffrey and Sub J.Brady it was to be Mountnugent standing strong with 2-15 to 0-7 on the scoreboard at last glance. Referee Ollie Donoghue blew the final whistle much to the delight of the team, managers, subs and supporters and it was delight all round with a final to look forward to for the first time in five years. In the dressing room afterward the management team reminded the lads that while they had a great victory, they had won nothing yet and that it would take a further 10% increase in effort to mount a challenge to Drung in the final on the 12th of October. Proceedings finished with a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" for Goalkeeper Jonathon Givney who celebrated his 21st on the day. I'm not sure if head quarter has ever had such a musical finish to an Semi Final in its illustrious history.
