The Late Paddy Murphy A family and the wider community of Grange recently mourned the death of one of its well-known residents, Paddy Murphy. Paddy passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25 at the age of 89. Born on September 1, 1918 in Straboe, Tullow, Paddy was the son of Thomas and Brigid Murphy. He was predeceased by his four brothers Jimmy (Coltstown), Larry (Carlow), Thomas (Baltinglass) and Willie (Straboe). As a young man Paddy moved to Grange to farm with his uncle Pat McDonald and his aunt Lizzie, where he became part and parcel of the Grange community. Paddy was also a popular and highly respected member of the farming community, display great farming skills, in particular his abilities in judging stock. For many years before the use of modern machinery, Paddy and his neighbours would willingly help each other out during busy farming times, a testament to the strong sense of community held by Paddy. Paddy married Pauline Lalor of Ballykealy in 1969 and together with their son Gearoid they worked on the family farm in Grange. Paddy was a loving husband and a proud father. He was a hugely sociable man who was great company for all who knew him. He was an expert card player and always enjoyed a game of 25's. In his younger years he was an athletic young man and a keen footballer. He played Gaelic football with Grange GFC in the 1940's and in 1952 he was a selector for the Grange minor team that won the championship. He was a staunch supporter of the local club and was a proud to be honoured this year in the club's Hall of Fame. A mark of respect to Paddy, former a guard of honour at his removal to the Church of John the Baptist, Grange, while at the club grounds the flags flew at half mast. Paddy will be greatly missed by his wife Pauline, his son Gearoid, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law relatives, neighbours and many friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
