Ryan, Dan

The Late Dan Ryan There was widespread shock and sadness in Fermoy following the death of Dan Ryan, aged 64, of Grange West. Dan, who had been ill for some time, was regarded as a true gentleman. A native of Glantane in North Cork, he was very well known all over North Cork and West Waterford where he was based in his work with Teagasc in Lismore as an adviser to the farmers of the area, who showed their appreciation of his services to them by the huge numbers who attended his removal and funeral on Wednesday last. Dan had spent a lot of his lifetime in Fermoy. As a youth he attended St Colman's College where his love of sport and particularly hurling saw him play many games with his school in Dean Ryan and Harty Cup hurling. He continued his association with the college later on in life when he became involved in the Past Pupils Union of which he was President at one stage. He rarely missed a game in which St Colman's played and more especially when his three sons became of age to play their parts on the teams during the past ten years or so. Dan continued his association with Gaelic games when he became involved in the local club in Fermoy where his sons are all current club players and members. His car was always available to ferry boys to games all over Avondhu and further afield at times. Dan was also a member Fermoy toastmasters for a number of years and was a very eloquent speaker. Perhaps his greatest passion, other than his wife Marian and his family, was the Cork senior hurling team and the winning of the Liam McCarthy cup in September was important to him, but if Cork were not to win, then his next choice would have been Waterford and who would blame him for that. St Patrick's Church was crowded when Dan's funeral Mass was con-celebrated by Rev Fr Eamonn Barry St Colman's and other priests who were friends and colleagues of Dan. A multiple guard of honour which included the Cork Co Board Chairman Michael Dolan, flanked his coffin as it left the church, comprised of GAA personal from his club's in Fermoy and Kilshannig, as well as many past and present members of St Colman's College and its staff. Dan will be sadly missed by his wife Marian, family members Anne, Cait, David, Peadar, Ide and Fergal, grandchildren Maeve and Eoin Daniel, his brothers Denis and David, his nieces, nephews, mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, son-in-law John, relatives and his many many friends of long standing. He was laid to rest in Kilcrumper New Cemetery. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. Courtesy of The Carlowman 8 May 2008
