The Late Paddy Murphy The death took place in the Sacred Heart Home, Carlow on Tuesday March 4 of Paddy Murphy late of the Shop, Ballyloo Cross. Paddy was a highly renowned footballer who played Tinryland and Carlow for many years. He won Senior Championship medals with Tinryland in 1946, 48, 49, and 50. He put in many fine performances on Tinryland and Carlow teams in that era. He played on Carlow team in 1945 that defeated Cork with 13 players from Tinryland featuring on that famous day. Paddy captained Carlow against Longford in 1951 on the day of the Mullingar crash when five Carlow supporters were killed on way home. He scored a goal that day from centre forward position. Paddy was a very accomplished footballer who had a powerful left foot. Paddy was the last surviving member of Murphy family having been pre deceased by Brothers Andy, Seamus sisters Bridie Feehan, Nan Kavanagh, May and sister Lena who was a nun who drowned in Australia. She was known as St Remi. He took over the running of the shop in Ballyloo when his sister May died. Paddy pre deceased by his wife Lily nee Doogue in 1971, having been married in 1961. Paddy worked in England for a time in Luton in the Vauxhall factory. He was also a very accomplished Pitch & Putt player who was involved in the Tinryland club when it started in the late 1960's. He also played pitch & Putt at many of the local courses such as Bagenalstown, St. Fiaccs and Castledermot. Affectionately known as The Shopman, Tinryland and Carlow jersies were draped in his coffin at his removal and burial. He was a character who had his own unique wit and thrived on a good argument or debate. Loved to play cards and back a horse. He had spent the past five years in Sacred Heart home and Bethany House where he was well looked after and liked. At his removal there was a guard of honour from past and current members of Tinryland GFC. He is survived by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives and friends. Removal took place from R. Healy and Son Funeral Home, Pollerton castle to St. Joseph's Church Tinryland (via Ballyloo). Funeral Mass took place followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
