Bambrick, David
September 30, 2007
For almost every morning of his 90 years David Bambrick made the familiar journey to Mass, driving along the country roads he knew all his life.
Last Monday morning at 9.15am, David tragically lost his life on that familiar journey to morning Mass in Bagenalstown when his Honda 50 motorcycle collided with a stationary jeep at Closutton, Leighlinbridge a mere one mire from his home.
David (davy) from Moneymore, Bagenalstown suffered severe head injuries and was taken to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny where he died a short time later.
A brave David was conscious at the scene of the accident. Indeed it is a great comfort to his family that he was surrounded by his lifelong neighbours and friends until the ambulance arrived.
David was a great family man and was delighted to have his eight children, 22 grandchildren and one great grandchild with him on the occasion of his 90th birthday party in Ballykealey Manor on July 8 last.
David was predeceased by his wife, Bridie, in 2002 and it is with fond memories that the family now remember how happy the couple were on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
A native of Bawnree, Bagenalstown, David came from a faming stock and loved the idyllic countryside he grew up in, the animals and the farming way of life. In his younger years he had kept cattle and took great interest in tending to them and also helping out neighbours with their herds.
David started out his working life as a young man in carlow Sugar Factory then later the nearby kellimont Quarries where he remained for several years until his retirement.
Another great interest for Davy was the GAA and he enjoyed nothing more than following the fortunes of local club Old Leighlin and the county senior team. Indeed David cycled to Croke Park to be there for that historic day in 1944 when Carlow's senior football team won their first and only Leinster title.
More recently, he accompanied his son, David, to the recent clash between Old Leighlin and Eire Og in this years championship.
David was also a selector of the old Leighlin senior team which won the Junior Championship in 1974 and intermediate championship in 1975.
He also took a keen interest in politics and every night enjoyed the craic, banter and maybe a few bob winnings by playing cards with his daughter Mary McDowell and son-in-law Bill, who lived with him.
David is survived by his children Liam (US), Mary (Moneymore), Kay (Waterford), John (Dublin), Noel (Wicklow), David (Moneymore), Martin (Celbridge) and Pascaline (Kilcormac, Co. Offaly) brothers Stephen and Christopher, sister Bridie, grandchildren, great-grandchildren James, relatives and many friends.
