The Late Dannie Doogue The close knit community of Graiguecullen is in mourning following the passing of Daniel (Dannie) Doogue, late of 84 St Clare's Road, Graiguecullen. Dannie who turned 75 last November passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 17 in St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny, surrounded by his entire family. Dannie was born on November 23 1929 the only child of Kathleen and Danny Doogue, Mill Lane, Carlow. Sadly his father passed away when Dannis was just three years of age. He was educated by the Christian Brothers in Carlow before becoming a full time plasterer. Dannie married Rita (nee Funne) the Numbers, Graiguecullen on Januaray 31st, 1951. They had thirteen children, Danny, Margaret, Kathleen, Anne, Jimmy, Pat, Billy, Joan, Francis, Michelle, Claire, Therese and John. The couple celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary last January surrounded by their family at a party in their family home. Dannie is survived by 31 grandchildren and one great grand child all of whom he adored. He was a devoted husband and family man. A prominent member of the GAA community Dannie captained the Laois county team in the 50s. He was also a member of the Graiguecullen football club throughout his sporting career. Dannie has left behind a rich legacy of sporting talent. His son Danny played on the only Laois team to win an All Ireland Junior title in 1973. While his Grandson Danny was part of the first Laois All-Ireland minor winning team of 1996. Dannie maintained his strong ties with Graiguecullen Football Club well into retirement and enjoyed the odd social drink in the clubhouse there. He will be fondly remembered as a lover of all sport. Dannie had a incredibly strong faith and attended the Novena in Carlow Cathedral every week. He also attended the evening mass in St Clare's, Graiguecullen every sunday without fail. Dannie's remains were received at St Clare's Church by Fr Byrne. The Requiem mass took place the following day at 10am. It was con-celebrated by Fr Fingleton and Fr Sean Kelly. The Graiguecullen Men's Choir performed a number of moving hymns both in the church and at the graveside while Graiguecullen football club formed a guard of honour. Dannie was laid to rest in St Mary's Cemetery in Carlow. He will be sadly missed by his wife, sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchild, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
