The Late Jim Savage
The death took place recently of Jim Savage,The Square, Tullow, Co. Carlow. Jim was a very popular and well loved member of the community in Tullow having been born in the town and lived there all his life.
A devoted husband and father, Jim married his wife Rita in 1961.
He worked for Carlow County Council as a rate collector for 28 years and also worked for many years as an Auctioneer's Clerk for Patrick G Dawson & Sons.
Jim was also a well known figure to the farmers in the locality through his work as the auctioneer's clerk at Tullow Livestock Sales, a job he enjoyed very much.
A former pupil of the Patrician Brothers, Tullow and Ballyfin College, Co. Laois, Jim was a keen sportsman having played Gaelic football and hurling for Tullow in his youth.
Indeed Jim and also part of Carlow county team during the heydays of the 1940s.
Jim also had a great interest in many other sports including golf, billiards and horse racing.
Jim was a member of the local billiards club in Tullow for many years and as a member of Coolattin Golf Club very much enjoyed his round of golf.
An avid follower of horse racing Jim always made the annual trip to Punchestown in his younger days and throughout his life took a keen interest in racing.
Indeed he had been thrilled at the success of local horse Hardy Eustace in recent years.
He had his picture taken holding the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Trophy following Hardy Eustace's great win in the Champion Hurdle of 2004. Needless to say he would have been overjoyed to have seen Hardy Eustace retain his title in 2005.
Another pastime enjoyed by Jim was a game of cards, which he enjoyed with like minded friend.
Jim was a familiar face to all the people of Tullow in particular during the summer months as he sat in the step of his house and greeted people as they passed up and down the street. Jim was indeed a great communicator and never let his disability impede him, in his interaction with people.
He had a great sense of humour and always had a smile on his face.
Jim will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Rita, his son Martin, Tullow; daughters Ann Hayden Tinryland and Maureen Orbinsky Tullow; daughter-in-law Liz, sons-in-law Edmond Hayden and James Orbinsky, his 12 grandchildren, relatives and a wide circle of friends.
