Carlow manager Turlough O'Brien has lamented over the fact that star midfielder Brendan Murphy was suspended for their crucial qualifier clash against Cavan last weekend.

The Barrowsiders put in a massive effort against their more illustrious Ulster opponents without their talisman Murphy and O'Brien can be forgiven for wondering what might have been if the towering midfielder was available for selection.

"It was devastating for Brendan and it was devastating for the team," O'Brien told the Carlow Nationalist. "The GAA disciplinary system is just not fit for purpose.

"The way the whole thing is handled and the appeals process is so difficult. It's just nonsense."

O'Brien does feel that the players answered all the criticism that had been pointed their way over the course of the year.

"We were completely written off. Totally dismissed. It's insulting the way people talk about Carlow football but I hope we restored some pride in that."
