Carr feels sorry for Carlow

Tommy Carr has asked: why do the Carlow footballers bother to train?

The former Dublin captain and manager posed the question while commentating for RTE Radio on the Barrowsiders' 10-point defeat to Longford in last night's All-Ireland football first round qualifier at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. The Division 4 outfit also made an early exit from the Leinster SFC when going down to Laois by 17 points.

"I'm looking out at the Carlow players and you can only feel sympathy for them," he said.

"How they soldier on in a county jersey knowing they're never going to win a Leinster title? They play like that, they think like that, it's not their fault."

Carr maintains that the so-called weaker counties will continue to struggle until such time as they apply themselves in the same way as the strong counties.

"They won't put in the same level of effort because they know they're not going to win anything.

"They turn up the same number of times (at training as the strong teams). And they do the same level of training. But they're not applying themselves in the same way as the top counties," he added.
