Leinster MFC: Leech steers Westmeath home

May 10, 2012
Westmeath 0-19
Carlow 1-13

Ger Leech hit 0-10 as Westmeath set up a Leinster MFC quarter-final meeting with Wicklow following a dramatic losers' section extra-time victory over Carlow at Dr Cullen Park last night.

The St. Mary's, Edenderry Hogan Cup winner was the outstanding player on view as Tommy Carr's visitors came from four points down with 11 minutes remaining to force extra-time. And they never looked back after that, leading by two points at the end of the first period and eventually prevailing by three.

Sean Dempsey's Carlow, who needed two games and a period of extra-time to get over Wexford, led at the break in normal time by 1-5 to 0-6 with corner back Keith Chatten accounting for their goal.

The home side extended their advantage in the second half before Leech helped Westmeath secure extra-time. Carlow looked to have earned replay when Chris Blake brought them level with two minutes to go in extra-time, but two points from Coralstown/Kinnegad sharpshooter Leech and another from Sam Moran saw the Lake County through.
