Leinster Colleges SFC roundup

January 14, 2012
The Leinster Colleges SF 'A' championship got underway yesterday with seven first round games taking place.

A fancied Scoil Dara, Kilcock suffered a surprise exit at the hands of Malahide CS in Broomfield. Mark Hazley's 15th minute goal set the tone for the winners who grabbed a second goal through Conor Mullarkey four minutes before the break to leave them five points clear at the interval.

Kilcock resumed with points from Cian Mulhall and substitute Fergal McCabe, but Malahide always kept them at arm's length and a late McCabe goal proved to be no more than a consolation score for the visitors as the Dublin side prevailed 2-13 to 1-8.

In Belfield, Michael Kelly's 56th minute goal helped Ardscoil na Trionoide, Athy to a 1-14 to 2-7 victory over St Benildus by four points.

The home side had led by three points at the break thanks to goals from Paul Connolly (penalty) and the classy Shane Cunningham, who accounted for 1-5 of their tally, but inspired by midfielder David Hyland, Athy gradually clawed back the deficit with points from David O'Toole, Niall Kelly, Sean Ronan and Michael Kelly before the latter's goal sealed their place in the second round.

Elsewhere, North Leinster League runners-up Edenderry made a winning start to their campaign when they accounted for Marist, Athlone by 1-11 to 1-6.
