O'Byrne Cup round-up
January 08, 2012
Dublin, Meath and Kildare all posted victories in the first round of the O'Byrne Cup.
The Dubs were tested by Carlow at Dr Cullen Park but - inspired by Michael Darragh Macauley and Mossie Quinn - finished powerfully to win by 0-17 to 0-10.
Meath roared out of the blocks against Wexford at Navan and survived a second-half fightback to prevail by three points, 1-13 to 1-10.
And Kildare cantered to victory over DIT at Newbridge after Padraig O'Neill and Ronan Sweeney found the net early on, 2-11 to 0-9.
DCU took the spoils at Baltinglass as Harry Murphy's reign at the Wicklow helm began with a narrow 0-18 to 1-14 defeat.
Longford beat Athlone IT by 0-13 to 0-9 and Offaly led from start to finish against neighbours Westmeath at Tullamore - 3-6 to 0-7.
While it wasn't a particularly memorable day for university sides, UCD sent Laois crashing at Crettyard: 0-15 to 0-11.
