Christy Ring Cup: Brick rescues Kingdom

June 07, 2009
A Shane Brick point a minute from the end of extra-time earned Kerry a second chance following an absorbing Christy Ring Cup semi-final at Dr Cullen Park. Carlow.1-15 Kerry2-12 Paudie Kehoe gave holders and favourites Carlow a dream start with an early goal, but Brick responded with a penalty to give the visitors a 1-5 to 1-4 half-time lead. With Kehoe and James Hickey to the fore, the Barrowsiders upped the tempo in the second half and looked set to prevail until John Mike Dooley's goal in the dying moments brought the sides level on 1-13 to 2-10 and forced extra-time. Scores were at a premium in the additional 20 minutes with James Hickey edging Carlow in front before former Tipperary star Evan Sweeney levelled for the Kingdom. Substitute Robert Foley put Carlow in front once again in the 83rd minute, but Kerry refused to accept defeat and Brick's late equaliser means the sides must meet again in Tralee next weekend. Scorers - Carlow: P Kehoe 1-6 (0-6f), J Hickey 0-4 (1 sl), S Kavanagh (2 '65s), R Foley 0-2 each, M Brennan 0-1.
