Carlow SHC final: Brennan the hero for Naomh Brid
October 06, 2008
Midfielder Alan Brennan scored a last-gasp goal to give Naomh Brid a dramatic victory over holders Mount Leinster Rangers in the Carlow SHC final at Dr Cullen Park.
Naomh Brid.......3-9
Mount Leinster Rangers.2-11
Rangers looked to be on course to complete a three-in-a-row of successes when they held a two-point lead in injury-time, but Naomh Brid pulled victory out of the bag when Brennan connected with a '65' from team captain Brendan Lawlor and rattled the net for the winning goal.
The holders started brightly and led by 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter. But following the switch of Mark Brennan from full forward to midfield, the men from Ballinabranna, Old Leighlin and Leighlinbridge got back into contention and Brendan Lawlor's 30th minute penalty edged them into a 1-4 to 0-6 lead before Derek Byrne pointed for Rangers to leave the sides level at the break.
In a much-improved second half, Mount Leinster Rangers surged into a 2-9 to 1-7 lead thanks to goals from brothers William and James Hickey in the 41st and 44th minutes. But Naomh Brid refused to throw in the towel and after substitute Michael Cowman scored their second goal in the 53rd minute, Brennan struck late on to secure their third title in sensational circumstances.
